Finding Irish Castles for Sale

It is possible to find an Irish castle for sale. If you are determined, patient, and have the resources, you can buy a castle in Ireland. If you do the research and are committed to the project, you can own a very special property!

Did you ever dream about living in a castle? Waking up in the morning and feeling like royalty? Well, consider making that dream a reality! Finding Irish castles for sale is possible. By following the suggestions I collected on my most recent trip to Ireland, you can purchase your very own Irish castle.

ireland self catering holiday

First, you will need a representative in Ireland if you don’t live in the country. Real estate agents in Ireland are called "Auctioneers" or "Estate Agents", and work independently or belong to a group. The agents represent both buyers and sellers. In the Republic of Ireland, most Estate Agents belong to the Irish Auctioneers and Valuers Institute or the Institute of Professional Auctioneers and Valuers and are state licensed. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom and has a separate system of licensing.

Local and international property listing companies specialize in the rental and sale of Irish castles. Your agent will let you know when a castle in your desired location is listed for sale. It takes time, but castles do become available. If you decide to buy a castle, your agent will handle the closing; you should also hire a solicitor (lawyer) to handle your legal work.

A factor you must consider when buying an Irish castle is that most castles need extensive repairs. Castles are ancient and some have even been vacant for centuries. Before buying a castle, it is important to get price estimates for necessary renovations from contractors. Total project prices can range from several hundred thousand euros to more than a million.

 camper holidays ireland

A less costly option is to buy a castle ruin and leave it that way! There are hundreds of historic partial castle ruins throughout Ireland. You may find a piece of land with a castle ruin on it and build your own cottage or home on the same property.

After purchasing your castle, renovating it can be exhausting. It is possible to do it yourself if you can be in Ireland often or manage the project from a distance. If not, help is available for the whole process.

A "Property Locator" will work on your behalf during the entire process of buying and renovating a castle. He or she will look for a castle for you based on all your needs and consult with agents, architects, solicitors and engineers to find your perfect purchase and price. The Property Locator will also manage the renovation of the castle. It is an expensive service, but will give you the security of having your project in expert hands.

If you decide that buying a castle in Ireland is your dream, the effort is worth the reward of owning one of the most unique properties in the world!

Best Places To Have A Cottage Holiday

If you’re looking to have a great cottage holiday, there are a lot of places that you can go to, including Northumbria. It’s the cradle of Christianity in England and it’s also the scene of a lot of bloody Viking raids. It has a very rich history, and when you add to that the beauty that surrounds the area it’s difficult to pass up. Part of the Heritage Coastline is there and large parts of the area belong to the National Park.

The ancient kingdoms still stand in many areas and cast their spells over the countryside, and there are castles, walking trails, and so much more that the area has to offer. There are so many other options, as well, so don’t be afraid to bring your kids. You can find things for them to enjoy and not get bored as an adult. It makes Northumbria one of the best places to have a cottage holiday, but there are others, as well.

 sea cottages

You can find these others in Cornwall, Cotswolds, Devon, Dorset and Sommerset, Heart of England, Yorkshire, South of England, the Lake District, Norfolk and Suffolk. There are so many options that you can’t possibly end up without a great place to stay. The most important thing is to do your research so that you can find the cottage holiday option that suits you best. Not all of them are the same, with the only real similarity being that you’ll be staying in a cottage. Other than that, there are many differences in what the area is like and the kinds of things that you can enjoy while you’re there.

That being the case, you’ll need to take into consideration who will be going and what their needs and wants are so that you can pick a cottage holiday where everyone can have a good time and still have some things to do. It’s not always easy, especially if you have a large party of people or if you have children, but a little research can tell you a lot about a place and what it has to offer, as can talking to people who’ve been there already.

Cottages In Cornwall: Where Country Meets Convenience

You walk through the front door, and you find yourself transported into a seemingly new world. The deafening sounds of jackhammers, honking horns, traffic officers’ whistles, and shouting voices that try to rise above the other noises have been replaced by the melodious tune of a happy songbird. Road signs, paved roads, metallic vehicles, angular skyscrapers – all these symbols of the concrete jungle have been replaced by lush green grass; creatures that freely walk, crawl, or hop around; and trees heavy with ripe, sweet-smelling apples.

west cottages

Gone is the heavy, hot, and smelly city air that seems to press down on you like vise. You breathe in deeply, filling your lungs with the fresh oxygen produced by the green world around you. You feel strong, vibrant, and healthy; and why shouldn’t you? Even the most hardcore urbanites around the world can appreciate a getaway to a small house in the country. Cottages in Cornwall allow you to enjoy the great outdoors without missing the conveniences of the great indoors.

Cottage Country
Today, many people are simply crazy about cottages. These structures are less rustic than tents, which are prone to collapsing and depriving you of a good night’s sleep. On the other hand, cottages are also small and simple enough to make your stay more down-to-earth compared to towering hotels. It is fairly easy to find cottages in Cornwall, but where did "cottage" come from? The term originated from the Middle Ages, referring to places that housed farmers and their families. These cotters were servants who had all the rights of citizens, but were still subjects of a lord. Therefore, the first cottages were larger than tinier homes of common peasants. In fact, cottages may have referred not only to a home, but also a barn and some land.

If you visit England, chickens and cows will probably not be accompanying you, so a barn will be unnecessary. However, cottages in Cornwall can still provide you with comfy accommodations that most people during the Middle Ages would never even have imagined possible.

From the Middle Ages to the Middle East
While cottages in Cornwall are renowned the whole world over for their rustic charm, they are by no means rare. In fact, the cottages in Cornwall represent a worldwide phenomenon, as the cottage has spread throughout the world. Whether in regions such as the Americas, Europe, Africa, Australia, or the South Pacific, cottages around the world have their own local flavor.

* A traditional cottage in Finland is constructed with logs and is located alongside waterways. As of 2005, there are almost half a million cottages in Finland!

* Canadian cottages are usually situated nearby lakes or the ocean, where hiking, fishing, and sailing are often enjoyed.

* Hong Kong cottages are typically brick buildings with three floors. They often include balconies and an open roof for dining.

Mother Nature Meets the Mother of Invention
While cottages exist around the world, one should definitely experience British cottages which are believed to be the first of its kind. Cottages in Cornwall represent the best that the country has to offer. There is nothing corny about Cornwall cottages! Located in Southwest England, the peninsula of Cornwall boasts of a temperate, moist climate with rich river valleys and a southern coast ideal for subtropical plants. Surrounded by Mother Nature, yet proving that necessity is the mother of invention, these lodgings offer the best of rural and urban worlds. So, even if you stay at the cottages in Cornwall, enjoying the solitude of nature while doing laps in an outdoor heated swimming pool will not be a problem at all!

It is time to sweep away yest-a-year memories of Youth Hostels. Gone are the days of bizarre chores, large dormitories and inconvenient opening hours. Lake District Youth Hostels are inexpensive and booking is per night, allowing greater flexibility to explore Cumbria. Hostels, such as Wasdale Hall and Hawkshead are converted mansions, with fabulous grounds. Whereas other Hostels are remote cottages and shepherds bothys perfect for walkers who like to get away from it all.

A number of changes have taken place at Youth Hostels in recent years.

west cottages

These include:

Organic and locally sourced dining*

An increase in family and smaller rooms, rather than dormitories

User friendly opening hours

No chores

(* not available at all Youth Hostels)

There are 25 unique Youth Hostels in the Lake District.

sea cottages

Situated on the shores of Lake Windermere: Lakeside, which is the largest outdoor activity centre in Europe; and Waterhead an impressive Hostel commanding an excellent lake-front location. Both of these Hostels are large and lend themselves to school activity. If you are after something more tranquil then read on.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Black Sail Youth Hostel is a converted shepherd’s bothy, accessible only by foot. Another remote hostel is Coniston Coppermines. Although accessible by vehicle (via a non-metalled road), Coniston Coppermines is predominantly a walkers hostel, ideally situated to explore Coniston Old Man and Wetherlam and for those completing the Coast to Coast walk.

Facilities vary at each hostel. These can include a games room, cycle store and/or drying room. Self-catering kitchens are popular amongst visitors and some hostels also provide BBQ areas. Hostels providing meals often try to use local and organic food, where possible. Silver How restaurant at Butharlyp Howe Hostel in Grasmere is a fabulous example of this, serving local and organic food, wines and ales.

If the idea of a heavy back pack is putting you off. Then why not take advantage of the YHA shuttle bus. The bus shuttles between eight Lake District Youth Hostels (Easter to October) for a nominal fee. It also makes stops at Oxenholme and Windermere railway stations.

Disabled facilities are available at Arnside Youth Hostel just south of the Lakes. This converted Edwardian manor is perfect for exploring the Southern Cumbria.

Lake District Youth Hostels are available for everyone to use, but do check ahead as not all hostels accept guests under three years of age. Booking ahead is highly recommended and essential at some Hostels. Prices vary at each Hostel, with an average cost per night being around 14 (less for under 18’s). YHA Membership is not necessary, but non-members pay a small daily sur-charge, often making it financially viable to become a member.

Each Youth Hostel in Cumbria is unique in some way. From the pretty National Trust owned Victorian Mansion in the Langdales with open fires to more remote walkers Hostels at Honister Pass and Helvellyn.

Holiday Cottages Lake District

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009 | Author: admin

There is little doubt that those who have visited the regions of the English Lake District and Cumbria will recall and recount with pleasure the images of the lakes, mountains and tarns which together are the fundamental components of this beautiful area.

There may also be some damp memories of a place with an above average rainfall. A phlegmatic Australian work colleague when caught in a particularly heavy shower during a visit some years ago concluded that it was “wet as an otters pocket”. This definition is certainly a strong contender for inclusion in all Lake District and Cumbria tourist information publications.

A well known feature of the region is one where rapidly changing weather conditions can transform a rainy day to one of clearing skies and sunshine within a short space of time, or vice-versa. This is especially so on the higher ground, and it is easy to visualize the difficulties experienced by the hill farmers and those workers, who, in earlier times, toiled all year round to collect the stone scattered on the fell-sides to use for building the dry stone walls which wind up and over seemingly impossibly steep gradients.

cottages to buy

Areas of these fell-sides are the proving grounds in the traditional tests of skill and endurance by the men and women fell racers, and the dogs in the hound trailing contests.

Born in 1808, Will Ritson, a shepherd, wrestler, and latterly, landlord of the Wasdale Head Inn, was renowned as a highly entertaining raconteur of colourful tales. It is reported that even William Wordsworth and Thomas De Quincey on occasions, were to be found among an appreciative crowd of listeners.

He told of owning a dog, a cross between a trail hound and a golden eagle, capable of soaring over the dry stone walls and any other obstacle in its path. Credulous visitors from out of County were enthralled by his account of locally grown giant turnips, which, he said, were of such massive proportions, that villagers would spend weeks carving out edible portions before surrendering the remaining outer skins as shelters for the Herdwick sheep.

 lake district walking

The end result of the popularity of Will’s yarns has been the creation of the annual “Biggest Liar in the World” competition. The contest is held each year at the Bridge Inn, Santon, before an enthusiastic audience well nourished on a menu of “tatie pie” consisting of local mutton, black pudding, potatoes and red cabbage, washed down by some of the very fine and potent locally brewed ale. Be careful that tiger beef has not been an added ingredient!

There is no record of Will entering the “World Gurning Championship” held during the annual Egremont Crab Fair each September. Contestants stand on a stage with a horse collar placed over their head and shoulders. This unlikely adornment frames the attempts to contort their faces into distorted expressions. Winners of the most bizarre and grotesque faces are decided by the level of audience applause. It is believed that the Lake District in Cumbria is the only place in the world where such a contest is held. Visitors to our region may well hear a recalcitrant local child being reprimanded in terms of “stop yer gurning.”

Tradition is important to the town and village communities and many hours are spent in preparation for the village shows of the summer months featuring sheep-dog trials, sheep-shearing demonstrations, ferret racing (yes, ferret racing), livestock displays, side stalls, home-baked produce, and of course, Cumberland Wrestling.

Two very popular events are the Cumbria Steam Gathering of early traction engines, vintage/veteran buses, fire-engines, cars, motor-cycles and machinery, and the Westmorland County Show with emphasis on livestock, plus side-stalls offering a wide selection of wares including local products. Children are always well-catered for at all venues with an assortment of amusements both for the toddler and the older child.

This diverse blend of local events will add something extra to your visit and you will sense the local pride and be able to observe customs and timeless traditions which combine to make the Lake District and Cumbria so unique.
